The following is a listing of International sports bodies, all one of which is an independent governing body of the sport they are responsible for and manages its sport at a global scale, often drafting rules, promoting the sport to new fans and spectators and developing players and organising international or continental championships. Certain international sports federations, such as for instance the International Swimming Federation and the International Skating Union, may oversee multiple activities referred to in common usage as separate sports. FINA also regulates swimming divers, synchronised, swimming and water polo. These are separate "disciplines" within the single "sport" of Aquatics.
International sports associations form an integral element of both the Olympic and Paralympic movements. Each Olympic sport is represented through its international sports federation. It is then responsible for coordinating the competitions in the sport during the Games. To be considered an Olympic sport an international sports federation must be recognized from the International Olympic Committee.
Likewise, an international sports federation must be endorsed through the International Paralympic Committee to permit the sport to become an official paralympic sport. it is the case that many Paralympic Sports are controlled by a special commission of International Paralympic Committee which is according to the World Para branding, for example track and field athletics for athletes who are handicapped is controlled by the IPC itself, with the designation "World Para Athletics". Other Paralympic sport are also governed by the structure of the able-bodied equivalent to paralympic cycling. For instance, the UCI governs both ablebodied and paralympic cycling.
