Ayushi Podder Biography

 


If shooters pull out the rifle and aim it and aim, all that matters is their goal. The rest of the world fades away. The thought of winning loads is etched in their minds, the instinct will be the trigger. If their years of waking early, working more hours to training and even sacrificing your favorite foods are worth it in this moment. It's at this point that 19-year-old Ayushi Podder is training for!

Each time Ayushi shoots, her goal is greater than the "Bullseye" shot. Ayushi aims to get an Podium Finish! Each time she puts her finger on the trigger, she shoots the bullet to her goal of winning an Olympic medal hung around her neck , complete with the tri-colored flag flying over her.

Aayushi is an aspiring junior rifle shooter and the most recent young sensation in shooting from India to gain prominence in the field, following Manu Bhaker and Gayathri Nthyanadam, Mehuli Ghosh and others. Born on the 23rd of October, 2000. Aayushi is from Sheoraphuli, Hooghly of West Bengal.

Aayushi's enthusiasm and skill in shooting stem through her father Pankaj Podder, who himself was an ex- Indian shooter as well as an International Shooting Sport Federation ( ISSF) licensed and qualified coach.

Schooling Days And Sacrificed Dreams

Aayushi was totally devoted to the study of her years during her time at Techno Indian Public School. Unexpectedly, even though she was exposed to sports at a young age, she showed almost any passion for shooting.

As a child, Aayushi was seven years old, she completed a portfolio with the hope of becoming an actor or model. Aayushi also attended dance classes at a Classical Odisha style and participated in various school activities.

In the latter part of her life, Pankaj used to travel across the country to participate in matches. Aayushi did not think that she would one day follow in his steps. As a scholar who excelled in school, Aayushi wished to study MBBS when she was a teenager.

Start of Shooting Career

Things changed quickly when her father asked her to try shooting. Pankaj spoke about his goal of watching his daughter follow in his steps. "When my child was barely five year old, I was thinking that she could become the next shot Olympic gold medalist" Pankaj says.

She began training to help her father. Within seven days of being able to hold her air gun Ayushi became a national champion!

"It it was the first time I competed in a event which was also my first time being a winner!" she says, her excitement clearly evident in her voice. Her first major win spurred Junior Podder to take up shooting.

And with her father's steady support and support, she was never looking back. As time passed by, Aayushi immersed herself into shooting and discovered an exciting new sport to shed blood for. With her determination and drive to shoot, the school's principal and teachers also began to show their support when she embarked on her new adventure.

However, to be successful in the field of shooting the perfect shot, an athlete must have the highest concentration. For Ayushi the concentration and focus came effortlessly. This is the reason she could get high marks. "I'm proficient in academics. Concentration and focus are essential and these two abilities have helped me shoot significantly."

Ayushi has also recognized the value of perfection in both her sport and everyday life. When she was in the beginning of her practicing, she's father advised her "Ayushi is the only one who can take a perfect sight image". These words have helped her tremendously in her international career. They've been incorporated into her brain. "Perfection is important," she tells.

After becoming the state champion, Ayushi won the pre-national championship for juniors in the youth category the next month. Within one time, Aayushi was able to secure her spot to participate at the Indian team camp. Soon after, she was selected for the Asian air gun team, and the following year she was awarded her first international gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2016, Suhl, Germany.

The challenges faced by Indian athletes

Achieving success as an athlete in India is not as easy as it sounds. It's true that Ayushi is no exception. The young shooter has plenty of forgotten stories to tell about her travels to various places for competitions. One of them happened on returning from Asian Junior Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Ayushi along with her group been able to land at 5 AM at New Delhi from a long and exhausting journey. At this point when she finds out that she is scheduled for an 11:00 AM slot to participate in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions event at the All India Inter-University Championship. In the midst of sleep and hunger the young shooter competed in the competition and won the bronze medal.

After she spoke about this situation, Ayushi opened up about the incident without regret. She doesn't blame her insufficiency of sleep or hunger for her loss. Also, she does not blame lack of planning and organisation by the organizers.

This morning, Aayushi laughs it off. But, this is another item on a lengthy list of organisational and structural issues athletes have faced and continue to face in the sport's ecosystem in India.

At the time of the World Championship in Changwon, Korea, Ayushi had to be separated by eight days from the time she arrived until match day. She was unable to train for the entire eight days due to the scheduling of other events. Furthermore, her rifle was not in good condition. This led to a bad experience in the contest.

In addition Ayushi's father, as well as her coach was not able to join her on a trip because of budgetary problems. Another issue facing athletes in India in the present. The athletes are in financial straits to purchase equipment, travel for training, to eat nutritious food and many more.

Balance between education and shooting

Despite having to balance academics with shooting classes and traveling for occasions, Aayushi's grades in school was never lowered. After graduation from high school she decided to take the field of Humanities which allowed her to devote her time to the study of her subject and shooting.

Presently, Ayushi Podder is pursuing her undergrad degree in Public Administration at Punjab University at the same at the same time as she trains and participates in competitions. But, Ayushi believes that it could not have been achieved without the help of her school and the management.

Ayushi is not able to use an attendance bar because of her inclusion in the Sports Quota. She can exercise all year long and only attends to write tests. If competitions or selections conflict with her tests and the college schedules specific dates for her to sit the test.

A one-day in the life Ayushi Podder

As her father did, Ayushi travels a lot. All through all of the time, Ayushi takes part in at minimum ten competitions in her country. There are also trials for selection, and up or three competitions internationally the course of a year. In addition to her travels for different events, she frequently goes to Delhi to train in Dr Karni Shooting range. Dr Karni Shooting range, since it's the only shooting range in which she is able to train for the 50-meter categories.

Ayushi is also required to travel to Chandigarh to go to university frequently. Between her travels for college, training and competitions her schedule is so busy that she's hardly able to stay in her home.

A typical day for the teenager from West Bengal begins at 5.30 morning. She rises, gets fresh up and then has a quick warming-up. At 7.30 morning, Aayushi is on the breakfast table. After breakfast, she heads off to train.
